4
Clean up auto-filled dataGoogle auto-populates — audit everything

⚠️ Warning: Auto-populated listings often have wrong categories, hours, or addresses. Always audit after claiming.

Module 02 — Setting Up & Claiming

Categories & NAP Consistency

📂
Business Categories

The #1 ranking signal for local search. Choose carefully.

Primary Category

What your business primarily does. Google ranks you mainly for this. Be specific — "Italian Restaurant" beats "Restaurant".

Secondary Categories

Additional services you offer. Up to 9 allowed. Only add if they genuinely represent your offering.

Golden Rule of Local SEO
NAP
Consistency
N
Name Exact same as your signage & website
A
Address Consistent format across all platforms
P
Phone Same number on GBP, Yelp, website, Justdial

Inconsistencies confuse Google's crawlers and hurt your local ranking. Audit all directories regularly.

Module 02 — Setting Up & Claiming

Verification Methods

Google needs to confirm you're associated with the business. Here's how:

📮

Postcard

Mailed to your business address with a 5-digit PIN. Takes 5–14 days. Most common method.

📞

Phone / SMS

Receive a code via call or text. Only available for eligible businesses with a listed phone number.

🎥

Video Recording

Record a video of your location, storefront, and operations. Higher assurance verification method.

Instant

For businesses already verified via Search Console. Instant approval, no waiting period.

⚠️
Until verified, your listing won't appear publicly.

Plan your verification timeline especially for the postcard method — Google allows only one postcard request every 30 days.

Module 03

Optimizing
the Profile

  • Writing a compelling business description (750 chars)
  • Attributes — women-led, wheelchair accessible & more
  • Adding products & services with descriptions & prices
  • Photos & videos — types, best practices & frequency
  • Business hours and special hours
  • Exercise: Audit & score a real GBP listing
Module 03 — Optimizing the Profile

Writing the Business Description

Character Limit
750

Only the first ~250 characters show without "More" click. Lead with the most important info first.

What to Include
  • What you do + who you serve
  • Your USP — what makes you different
  • Key services, specialties, or locations
  • Natural keywords (no stuffing)
  • A subtle call-to-action
✓ Do This
  • Write like a human, not a robot
  • Use natural keyword placement
  • Mention your service area
  • Highlight experience or awards
  • ✗ Avoid
  • Promotional language ("Best in town!")
  • Phone numbers, URLs, or emails
  • Keyword stuffing
  • Comparing to competitors
  • Example Opening

"Serving Hyderabad families since 2008, [Business Name] offers expert plumbing, electrical, and home repair services across Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, and surrounding areas. Our certified team of 20+ technicians is available 6 days a week…"

Module 03 — Optimizing the Profile

    Photos & Videos

Businesses with photos receive 42% more direction requests and 35% more website clicks. Source: Google

    Photo Types to Upload

    🪑
    InteriorSet ambience expectations
    🍽️
    Product/ServiceShow what you offer
    👥
    TeamBuild trust & personality
    Best Practices
    • Minimum resolution: 720×720px
    • Upload at least 10 photos to start
    • Add 1–2 new photos weekly — signals activity
    • Use real photos — stock images get flagged
    • Avoid heavy filters or watermarks
    Videos
    • Max 30 seconds, up to 75MB
    • Min resolution: 720p
    • Ideal: behind-the-scenes, testimonials, walkthroughs
    • Videos appear on Maps prominently
Module 03 — Optimizing the Profile

    Products, Services & Attributes

    🛍️
    Products
    • Add products with name, description & price
    • Link to your product/order page
    • Shows up in the Products tab on Maps
    • Ideal for retail, food & e-commerce
    🔧
    Services
    • Add service categories and individual items
    • Include a description for each service
    • Add pricing if fixed (optional)
    • Helps match search queries to your listing
    🏷️
    Attributes
    • Identity: Women-led, LGBTQ+ friendly
    • Accessibility: Wheelchair accessible entry, parking
    • Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, outdoor seating, delivery
    • Payments: Credit cards, UPI, cash only
    🎯

Pro Tip: Attributes appear as filter chips on Maps. Customers actively use filters like "wheelchair accessible" or "women-led" — these directly affect whether you appear in their results.

Module 03 — Optimizing the Profile

    Business Hours & Profile Completeness

    🕐
    Business Hours
    Regular Hours

Set per day of the week. Keep accurate — wrong hours create bad customer experience and hurt your ratings.

    Holiday Hours

Google prompts you to update for upcoming public holidays. Always keep this current — it affects "Open now" signals.

    Temporarily Closed

For renovations or seasonal changes. Use "Mark as temporarily closed" — don't delete the listing.

    🤖
    Q&A Has Been Retired
    Deprecated Nov 2025

Google shut down the traditional Q&A feature in November 2025. It has been replaced by AI-powered "Ask Maps" — a Gemini-driven experience where users type questions and Google auto-generates answers.

    What replaces it: Ask Maps

Gemini pulls answers from your GBP data, photos, reviews, and website. The more complete your profile, the more accurate the AI answers.

    Action Item

Audit your attributes, services, and description — these are now the primary data sources for AI-generated answers about your business.

    Module 04

    Posts &
    Engagement

    • Types of posts: Updates, Offers, Events
    • Post lifespan and publishing frequency
    • CTA buttons and where they link
    • Demo: Creating a post live
    Module 04 — Posts & Engagement

    Types of GBP Posts

Posts appear in your listing on Search & Maps — like mini social media updates for your business.

    📢

    Update

    ⏰ Expires after 7 days

General announcements, news, or content. Best for regular posting cadence. Include a photo for higher engagement.

    CTA OPTIONS

Book, Order Online, Learn More, Call Now, Get Quote, Visit Website

    🏷️

    Offer

    ⏰ Until offer end date

Promotions, discounts & deals. Prominently shown with a special tag. Add coupon code, T&Cs, and a redemption link.

    BEST FOR

Seasonal sales, festive discounts, first-time customer deals

    📅

    Event

    ⏰ Until event end date

Workshops, webinars, store events, pop-ups. Requires a title, start & end date. Highly visible on Maps during the event window.

    PRO TIP

Create a new post for each event — don't extend the same one. Fresh posts signal activity to Google.

    📌

Frequency: Aim for at least 1 post per week. Consistent activity signals an active business — which can positively influence rankings.

    Module 04 — Posts & Engagement

    GBP Chat — What Happened?

    💬
    Messaging Was Discontinued
    Removed July 31, 2024

Google removed the direct chat/messaging feature from Google Business Profile on July 31, 2024. Users can no longer initiate new conversations from Search or Maps. Existing chat histories were also phased out.

This was part of a broader trend — Google also retired the Business Calls API (May 2023) and the Q&A API (November 2025), consolidating toward AI-driven discovery rather than direct communication channels.

    Alternatives for Customer Communication

With GBP chat gone, these are the channels that matter now:

    📞
Phone Number on GBPStill the #1 direct action — track call clicks in Insights
    📅
Booking LinkAdd a "Reserve" or "Book" CTA linking to your scheduler
    🌐

    🔗
Review Short LinkGet it from GBP Manager → Share button
    ✓ Do This
  • Ask right after a positive interaction
  • Make it easy — one-click link
  • Train staff to ask in person
  • Remind once if no response in 5–7 days
  • ✗ Never Do This
  • Buy fake reviews — permanent penalty risk
  • Offer incentives for reviews (policy violation)
  • Ask employees or friends to review
  • Bulk-send requests to many people at once
  • Timing Insight

The best time to ask is within 24–48 hours of service delivery when the experience is still fresh. Response rates drop significantly after 1 week.

    Module 05 — Reviews Strategy

    Responding to Reviews

Responding to reviews signals to Google that you're an active, engaged business — positive or negative.

    😊
    Positive Reviews
    • Personalize your response — mention what they praised
    • Keep it brief — 2–3 sentences is enough
    • Invite them back or mention something upcoming
    • Avoid copy-paste identical responses
    EXAMPLE

"Thank you so much, Priya! We're thrilled you loved the service. Our team works hard to ensure a great experience every time. Looking forward to seeing you again! 🙏"

    😟
    Negative Reviews
    • Respond within 24–48 hours — shows you care
    • Acknowledge the experience, don't be defensive
    • Take the conversation offline (share email/phone)
    • Keep the public reply short — resolve privately
    • Never argue — your reply is visible to all
    EXAMPLE

"We're sorry to hear about your experience, Ravi. This doesn't reflect our standards. Please reach us at support@[business].com and we'll make this right for you."

    Direction Requests

High purchase intent. People requesting directions are likely to visit in person.

    Calls

Counted when someone taps your phone number from the listing.

    Website Clicks

Compare with GA4. Add UTM parameters to track GBP traffic separately.

    Pro Tip

Track month-over-month trends. A consistent upward trend after optimization is your proof of performance.

    Module 06 — Insights & Performance

    Connecting GBP to Google Analytics

Add This UTM to Your GBP Website URL
    yourwebsite.com?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp&utm_content=website-button

Add this to the website URL in your GBP profile. Enables you to track GBP traffic separately in GA4 under Source/Medium reports.

Where to Add UTMs in GBP
    • Website URL (main button)
    • Products → each product's "Order" link
    • Posts → CTA button links
    • Services → booking or enquiry links
    Watch Out For Discrepancies

GBP's own "Website Clicks" count and GA4's reported sessions from GBP often differ. This is normal — GBP counts the tap, GA4 counts a successful session. Bounce, ad blockers, and JS errors account for the gap.

Use UTMs as your source of truth for conversion attribution. GBP's built-in click count is for directional awareness only.

    Module 07

    Local SEO
    Signals

    • The 3 local ranking factors: Relevance, Distance, Prominence
    • How GBP fits into the broader local SEO ecosystem
    • Common mistakes that kill local rankings
Module 07 — Local SEO Signals

    Google's 3 Local Ranking Factors

Google uses these three pillars to decide which businesses appear in the Local Pack. Source: Google Business Profile Help documentation

    🎯

    Relevance

How well your profile matches what someone is searching for. Improve by: selecting the right categories, writing a keyword-rich description, and adding detailed services.

You control this — profile completeness and accuracy are everything here.

    📏

    Distance

How far each result is from the location used in the search. Google considers the searcher's location even when they don't specify "near me".

Limited control — but accurate address and correct service area help.

    🏆

    Prominence

How well-known the business is — online and offline. Driven by reviews, backlinks, citations, website authority, and overall web presence.

Long-term play — reviews and citations compound over time.

    🔗

GBP is just one signal. It works alongside on-page local SEO (city pages, schema markup), citations (Yelp, Justdial, IndiaMart), and backlinks from local websites. A strong GBP profile amplifies all of these.

Module 07 — Local SEO Signals

    Common Mistakes That Hurt Rankings

    Keyword stuffing in business name

"ABC Plumbers Best Plumbing Hyderabad" — against Google's policies and can result in listing suspension.

    Inconsistent NAP across the web

Different phone numbers or address formats on Yelp, Justdial, and your website confuse Google's crawlers.

Wrong or overly broad primary category

Choosing "Restaurant" instead of "South Indian Restaurant" leaves significant ranking potential unused.

    Ignoring attributes & services

With Q&A gone, attributes and services are now the primary data sources for AI-generated answers. Incomplete = wrong answers.

    Buying or faking reviews

Google's detection has become sophisticated. Penalty = listing suspension. Not worth the risk.

Setting up and abandoning the profile

Activity signals matter. No posts, outdated photos, unanswered reviews = stale listing that loses ranking ground.

    5 Key Takeaways

    You're now
    GBP-ready.

    1
    Claim & Verify First

An unclaimed listing is a missed opportunity. Verify fast.

    2
    100% Profile Completion

Every blank field is a ranking signal you're leaving behind.

    3
    Post Weekly, Photo Monthly

Activity and freshness are ranking signals. Stay consistent.

    4
    Reviews Are Non-Negotiable

Build a system to ask, collect, and respond — every week.

    5
    Measure What Matters

Track Searches, Directions, and Calls in Insights monthly.
